THUMBNAIL SUMMARY: This idyllic destination, part of a protected marine park, in March '05 was awarded the accolade of "Best Diving Beach" by the national magazine Men's Journal. It's often possible to see humpback whales cruising past Grand Turk island from January to April, says Kelly Shanahan, dive guide & co-owner of the BOHIO DIVE RESORT & SPA. On many dives, all year long, there are lively sharks, mantas & assorted colorful reef fish in abundance, with "viz" sometimes reaching close to 150-200 feet in calm seasons. Snorkeling & scuba diving conditions are perfect for beginners & advanced divers alike. The classic Grand Turk diving wall, just a couple hundred yards off the western shoreline was voted among the Top Ten Advanced Diving Sites in the April '05 issue of Rodale's Scuba Diving Magazine. This dramatic dropoff runs from shallow reefs to an ocean trench a mile deep, with chutes & tunnels to explore. This huge wall attracts a wealth of wildlife & richly colorful corals. "You never know what you'll see - whales, sharks, turtles, mantas," declares Kelly with confidence.
The staff at BOHIO DIVE RESORT & SPA is all-star: their chef is an acclaimed culinary wizard from Vancouver, BC, who received wonderful reviews from his local press for years. The scuba diving department is talented & energetic. Their local divemasters are gracious, strong & savvy. These gents have hundreds of dives under their belts. The domestic staff & servers are as bright & cheerful as a spring garden. Wait until you see what co-owner Nick Gillings & Kelly have done with this place. It has our vote hands-down for the best-value 3-star lodging with scuba diving & snorkeling emphasis -- anywhere in the Turks & Caicos. The BOHIO DIVE RESORT & SPA has 16 simple but comfy rooms -- 12 no-frills beachfronts + 4 larger suites -- just steps from their scenic waterfront. All rooms are air conditioned, with ensuite facilities, ceiling fans, fridges & TV. The newly refurbished BOHIO RESORT offers the best sandy shoreline on the island for Grand Turk scuba diving. They also offer small-craft sailing & ocean kayaking. Now we cannot fail to mention the superb cuisine, created by a respected Vancouver, Canada chef who recently caught the diving bug & relocated to secure a new dream in this tranquil, visually vibrant Caribbean setting.

The BOHIO DIVE
RESORT & SPA, Grand Turk’s best & brightest new lodging +
restaurant operation, opened its doors officially on 23 April ’05 with a
well-attended ceremony that brought in top brass from the island government
office & scores of happy well-wishers from the islands as well as the USA. People recognize a winner when they see
it coming. Here is why that matters
on a island like Grand Turk,
where some prime properties have changed hands 2 or 3 times in the 15 years we
have sent preferred clients to this superior scuba diving destination.
There is so much ho-hum, middle-of-the-road
lodging all over the Caribbean – resort
owners & restaurateurs playing it safe & dull – that when we find
a diamond in the rough like BOHIO DIVE RESORT &
SPA, we have to sit up & take notice. It’s no risk to predict a rousing
success for this spirited little resort, with a staff that knows how to have
fun, yet packs more per capita talent on staff than most Caribbean
diving resorts twice its size. U.S.
Dive Travel considers this Grand Turk diving locale to be one of the resorts
most likely to achieve international acclaim, anywhere in the Eastern
Caribbean region. These guys are going places. Give them a few months to iron out the wrinkles
that any new dive resort encounters at startup, & in two shakes of a
lobster’s tail they will be in a flourishing groove. Our advance agents went down in summer '05
& declared the place a simple & unpretentious locale, nothing super fancy to be sure, but a
beautiful getaway, well-priced, solidly staffed, nicely maintained;
with to-die-for meals & the best new fishing / diving vessel on the island. There have been a few bumps
along the road, as is normal for all new resort startups, but the majority of clients have been delighted
with Bohio Dive Resort, & they have called us or written us with gracious letters of thanks.

The staff at BOHIO
DIVE RESORT & SPA is all-star: their chef is an acclaimed culinary

divemasters are gracious, strong & savvy & these gents have hundreds of
dives under their belts; the
domestic staff & servers are as lovely & cheerful as a spring

Nick & Kelly have done with this place. It is going to be the class act of Grand

BOHIO DIVE RESORT & SPA – the
SENIOR STAFF MEMBERS:
- NICK GILLINGS: co-owner, PADI Dive Instructor, jack
of all trades. Nick is a
former I.T. wonk from London, UK who first visited Grand Turk in March
’04 & was so smitten by the island’s laid-back culture he
ditched a computer consultancy he had founded 10 years earlier &
escaped city life for the joys of small-town Caribbean living. Nick is friendly, respectful &
outgoing, a lot of fun.
- KELLY SHANAHAN: co-owner, PADI Dive Instructor,
also a certified sailing & canoeing instructor, front office manager
& jill of all trades. She
worked with Nick in I.T. back in London for
years, & also caught the Grand Turk
diving bug. Kelly is super
hard-working & as hospitable as the day is long. She’s a delight to work with,
islanders agree. We find her
attentive to details, courteous & gifted with an easygoing sense of
humor.
- SUNNY: Her name is every bit
accurate. Sunny’s smile
& cheerful countenance say it all. She is one of the luminous beings
on this already gracious island.
Sunny also is an experienced PADI Dive Instructor & has keen
knowledge of local fish & coral species + the rare talent of speaking
through her reg to clients underwater. (Word is you gotta hear this, funseekers !)
- KEL & “MEAT": The two muscular local gents who
serve as Sage’s divemasters on their brand new U.S. built
catamaran dive boat. (See vessel photos below). Kel also plays in a Grand Turk dance band called “Outcast”
& can be heard cuttin’ his groove at the resort some
evenings. He & Meat are
also experienced fishing guides who have nailed some major pelagics over
the years (See fishing photos).
- ZEV BECK: This chap is the “straw who
stirs the drink,” as New York Yankees slugger Reggie Jackson once
said. The resort’s chef,
Zev earned serious accolades from restaurant reviewers & the local
cognoscenti in Vancouver,
BC for years, then also
caught island fever & took up diving as his new passion. Nick & Kelly are lucky to have
this gentleman; his reputation is sterling. Zev’s restaurant is the best
place to wine & dine on Grand Turk, &
even his competition concedes that.
Interesting aside: Zev is also a skilled masseur, with special
expertise in hot rock & Swedish techniques. But you will have to chat with him on
island about those particulars, since he will be beaucoup busy
with the vital victuals, day after day.
- ELAINE BECK: Zev’s energetic &
charming wife, restaurant manager & resort events coordinator. Like nearly all the staff, Elaine
dives up a storm & loves the sport with a Grand
Turk diving passion.

The Caribbean
tribe of Taino Indians, the first known inhabitants of these entrancing islands,
called their homes "Bohio". So the resort’s unofficial
motto has become this – “Come, relax, unwind; let our Bohio be your
own.”
This idyllic spot, part of a protected
marine park, in March ’05 was awarded the accolade of best diving beach
by U.S.
magazine Men’s Journal. Here is what outdoor reporter Jad
Davenport wrote about Bohio Resort’s
beach location on Grand Turk: … “In Grand Turk's Columbus Landfall
National Marine
Park, wild donkeys wander Cockburn Town, the capital, & you can hear
paint peeling off 18th-century salt-baron mansions…. (you can) snorkel
with snappers 25 feet down at Finbar's, free dive 35 feet to the rusted
namesake at The Anchor or scuba among black coral at Black Forest.”
It’s often possible to see humpback
whales cruising past Grand Turk island from January to April, affirms Kelly Shanahan, dive
guide & co-owner of the Bohio Dive Resort. On many dives there are lively sharks,
mantas & assorted colorful reef fish in abundance, with “viz”
sometimes reaching close to 150-200 feet in calm time periods without lots of
rainfall runoff.
Conditions are perfect for beginners & advanced divers alike. The
“outstanding wall”, just a few hundred yards off the beach was
voted among the top ten advanced dive sites in April’s Scuba Diving Magazine.
This dramatic dropoff runs from shallow reefs to an ocean trench a mile deep,
with chutes & tunnels to explore.
This huge wall attracts a wealth of wildlife, of course.
“You never know what you'll see -
whales, sharks, turtles, mantas,” declares Kelly.

The newly remodeled dive shop is underway.

Witness the rare black corals at black forest or the teeming fish life at the
amphitheatre. The resort’s smart new dive boat will drop you at the more
remote dive sites in just five minutes, or you can just stroll in yourself, right
off the famous Pillory
Beach. For those folks
seeking a little less drama, there’s a natural sandy pool & shallow
house reef, perfect for snorkelers, swimmers or watersport enthusiasts just
starting out. The dedicated ecologically minded team boasts both international
& local expertise, offering a wide selection of PADI courses.
When you’re not diving, there’s no need to be bored, since BOHIO DIVE RESORT & SPA also offers Hobie cats
& kayaks to rent, & lessons or guided trips are always available. There
are whale watching tours, fishing expeditions, local island trips to Gibbs Caye
to enjoy the tame stingrays in a couple feet of warm water. There are local experts who will show
you how to go free diving for conch.
At the end of a hard day, on or under the
mystically aquamarine-turquoise water, the west-facing beach is a perfect spot
to enjoy an uplifting sunset yoga session or relax in a hammock with a house
cocktail while keeping an eye out for the elusive “green flash”
phenomenon.
Now mind you, funseekers, though no tourist trap like Grand
Bahama, this laid-back island really wakes up at night. A mix of
local bands & quaint beach bars providing the ideal setting to meet new
friends, share a rum punch, relish a beach barbecue, then hit the dance floor
with the friendly islanders, always ready & willin’ to shake a leg
& tilt a cold one.
Alternatively, you might opt for fine dining at the resort’s stylish
restaurant, the Guanahani, presided over by award-winning chef Zev Beck. His
exquisite menu has a French, Italian & Asian influence with, of course, a Caribbean twist & imaginative specials created from
the local catch of the day & seasonal ingredients.

GRAND TURK ISLAND
LORE / HISTORY:
Grand Turk, in the Turks & Caicos, lies
at the southeastern end of the Bahamas
Chain. These islands are a British
dependent territory, & arguably one of the world's top diving destinations.
The region was originally settled
by descendents of the Arawak Indians from South America,
known as the Taino Indians or Lucayans (island people). They called the island Guanahani
centuries ago. Some Caribbean
historians believe that Guanahani was the site of Christopher Columbus' first
landfall in 1492. But who knows
these things for sure? A national
park on the island celebrates this claim. The Turks & Caicos region has a long
history of colonial power struggles, marauding pirates & slave ships, &
it was important for its cotton & salt trade. Now the Turks &
Caicos islands are a peaceful haven for wildlife & watersport
lovers. Grand
Turk's motto is "beautiful by nature".

Check this hot new dive boat, sleek & powerful ...
... able to leap tall swells in a single bound ! OK,
we'll concede that it's only for gentler waters, ie.

GRAND TURK
DIVING:
Grand
Turk is home to the world's third largest living barrier reef, & consistently
gets ranked among the top diving destinations in this hemisphere, notably for
its spectacular wall diving. The
island is surrounded by marine reserves, historical wrecks & fascinating
tropical wildlife. Dive or snorkel right off the famed Pillory Beach,
or take one of the daily guided boat trips. For the James Bond enthusiasts
there are UPVs (Underwater Propulsion Vehicles) available for rent. Divers can even take the new PADI / UPV
specialty course! Our highly
trained PADI certified instructors cater for all levels of experience. For those new to the underwater world,
introductory scuba & snorkeling courses also are available. For more experienced divers, there is
plenty of opportunity to explore & advance your skills & certification.
All equipment is available for rent
& you pay for it on the island, right after arrival. Please request all scuba diving courses well
ahead of your arrival date. The
sheer reef wall, located 400 yards off Pillory Beach,
descends to a staggering 7,000 vertical feet (more than 2000 meters) below the
ocean’s surface & is home to a lush variety of exotic, colorful flora
& fauna. You'll see black
coral, manta rays, turtles, eagle rays & dolphins & hear the call of
the mighty humpback whale – if you are really lucky. Or you can head for the Cayes to feed the
friendly stingrays & swim with the sleepy ol’ nurse sharks.

Bohio's beach bar at high noon, dude!
GUANAHANI
RESTAURANT & BAR:
The
Guanahani Restaurant & Bar is open daily to offer a mouth-watering
cornucopia of gourmet dishes created by the master chef Zev Beck. His dishes, undeniably the best on the
island, are a creative blend of local & international flavors. Look at what some of the most
discerning food critics in Zev’s old hometown have said about his
creations …
- "Just about
everything we tried we ate with great gusto. The food has smooth but
intricate flavors & presentations are casually artful." -- Critic Mia
Stainsby, Vancouver Sun.
- “The
peppercorn-crusted tuna is loaded with fusion flavors. It is seared so
that the center of each rosy slice is sashimi rare, meltingly moist & tender.
I'd go so far as to say that it's the best tuna I've ever had." -- Critic Robin Mines, Vancouver
Courier.
- “Beck's menu works.
These are vibrant classic dishes artfully highlighted with different
ethnic flavors & expressively executed with wit & skill." -- Gary
Faessler, Vancouver
Lifestyles.
Gastronomic
enthusiasts can participate in a unique Bohio experience – first you take
to the high seas in our luxury boat & experience a fantastic afternoon's
fishing. Then you enjoy a one-on-one
lesson in the kitchen with Chef Zev & your fresh local catch. Zev will show you how to prepare his
world-famous signature dish -- “Ahi Tuna Encrusted with Sesame
& Peppercorns.” This is a must do for anyone who appreciates truly fine
food & the subtle art of preparing it.

Easy does it, little guy ... Nesting sea turtles
abound on Grand Turk, & are protected as
avidly as bald eagles in the mainland USA.
IMPORTANT NOTE about PRICES & TARIFFS:
All package prices listed here are
subject to possible change in this constantly evolving travel market. Lodging prices are traditionally stable
for one contract year at a time, while air ticket prices will fluctuate, as
will air ticket taxes, until all tickets paid in full. Until air tickets are formally issued,
all airlines, per FAA rules, reserve the right to change airfares without
notice -- a longtime industry standard.
We at U.S. Dive Travel will price-protect you to the utmost of our
professional ability; & that has been our pledge for one decade now. We normally secure excellent discount
air tickets for all groups of 10 or more clients to Grand
Turk. Remember please,
the federal government has deregulated airlines, so only they control their
pricing -- not any travel professionals. But our lodging & diving contracts
are set for one year at a time, & therefore are rock solid in most cases,
so no worries about land prices, or live-aboards.
Unless specifically noted, these
above packages are prices for only the land-based or vessel-based portion of
your vacation, reflecting double-occupancy rooms. Call us for single-occupancy rates. No triples or group quads are allowed at
Bohio Dive Resort & Spa, except in the deluxe suites upon special request,
some seasons.
International & commuter
"island-hopper" airfares are always extra above these Grand Turk
lodging + Grand Turk diving costs. Nominal service fees are also extra for
air tickets & the lodging + diving components. The baseline tariffs for all clients
start at $35 per person for the land portion + $35 pp for the air tickets. Late-booking clients may receive
slightly higher tariffs on the lodging + diving.
The preferred payment mode for all
lodging, diving & side tours is by cashier's check or wire transfer in U.S.
dollars. All clients living outside
the USA or Canada will
need to pay only via direct wire transfer in U.S. dollars. No personal checks nor
credit cards will be accepted for the land portion of any reservation,
please. Thank you for your gracious
understanding. Our service level is
the highest & our prices the lowest in this industry, & thus we need to
preserve a reasonable margin. For
published-fare air ticket bookings, USDT always accepts Visa & MasterCard. For discount wholesale air tickets,
however, USDT accepts only cashier's checks, please.
Remember, all clients to all
foreign destinations will be asked by local officials overseas, upon departing
the airport on your final day, to pay a nominal government departure tax,
usually between USD $35 - $45 per client.
USDT cannot collect this tax beforehand, so you simply pay it down
there, in your host country. Be
sure to stash away a little cash for this final moment at the airport, so
you'll get your exit visa stamped quickly with no fuss; & away you go. Best of luck with your
travel plans. We hope your
vacation is a safe & satisfying adventure. Blessings & best
wishes.
Best fishes too!
